Klaipėda Port to implement advanced navigation systems

With funding from the European Union, an advanced sensor system is being installed at the Port of Klaipėda, which will serve as another safeguard against GPS interference.

The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority (KVJUD) reports that it is working with 16 partners from nine European Union countries to implement advanced digital technologies that will ensure more efficient use of port infrastructure and smoother logistics processes at the port.

European Union funding under the Horizon Europe program is being used in the Port of Klaipėda for the European research and innovation project MOVEO. This project aims to improve logistics planning and the management of incoming ship traffic by installing a sensor system to monitor shipping conditions. A buoy with special sensors will be installed at the port entrance to ensure smooth navigation in unfavourable weather conditions or when GPS interference is strong.

During the project, the Port of Klaipėda will use EU funds to purchase and soon begin using the aforementioned equipment – sensors mounted on the buoy that will record and forecast the situation at the port breakwaters, while the project partners will create a platform that will collect data from the sensors for further analysis, forecasting, and transmission to other port information systems.

The installed system will allow real-time adjustment of logistics plans and optimization of cargo and transport flows.

The Port of Klaipėda is one of five MOVEO project demonstration sites where technological innovations are being tested. The project plans to develop and test a total of 18 innovations in Switzerland, Italy, France, and Lithuania over a period of three years. These demonstration projects cover different types of infrastructure, climatic conditions, and life cycle stages.

The total budget for the project is €5.73 million. The budget for the Port of Klaipėda in the project will be €395,600, with a funding intensity of 70%. (Klaipeda port authority information)
