The country’s first hydrogen-powered ship is launched
The first ever green hydrogen and electricity-powered ship in Lithuania, commissioned by the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, has been launched.
Last June, a symbolic keel-laying ceremony at the West Baltic Shipyard of the West Baltic Shipyard, a member of the West Shipyard Group, marked the start of the ship’s construction. To date, the hull has been fabricated and painted, and piping, valves, coolers, shaft lines, heat and fire insulation have been installed.
Once the ship is launched, the engine room equipment will be installed, the interior of the wheelhouse will be fitted, the electrical wiring and the main electrical engines will be installed, the hydrogen system will be installed and other works necessary for the operation of the ship will be carried out.
According to the rules, ships are obliged to hand over their generated waste when they arrive and before they leave the Port of Klaipėda. The Port Authority is in charge of waste collection, and to further improve the quality of the waste collection service, the company has decided to use modern and environmentally friendly equipment.
The vessel’s main function is to collect sewage, sludge, and garbage and ensure efficient waste management. The ship will be equipped with special tanks and a modern sewage treatment plant, which will allow the treated water to be transferred to the city’s sewage treatment plant and the wastewater. The vessel will be ready to work around the clock and collect up to 400 cubic meters of sewage.
The ship is being built by the West Baltic Shipyard and Baltic Workboats under a mutual agreement. The total value of the project is €12 million excluding VAT. (Klaipeda port authority information)
