European funding for electrification of quays in Klaipeda port
In recent years, the Port of Klaipeda has become increasingly ambitious in its sustainability efforts and is working to prove that Lithuania’s maritime industrial center can be environmentally friendly. The European Commission has welcomed the project to build a shore-side electricity supply infrastructure in the port, with EU funding of €8.6 million for a project worth around €11 million. The project marks an important step towards reducing the environmental impact of the port’s activities and enhancing the quality of life of locals.
Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, said of the project: “Investing in an environmentally friendly port also reflects our commitment to being a modern, innovative and responsible maritime transport hub. By installing an advanced shore-side power supply infrastructure for ships, the port is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations: improving air quality and reducing noise levels. At the same time, this project strengthens our port’s competitiveness in the international market.”
Today, ships calling at the Port of Klaipėda mainly use diesel. This fuel is used not only when the ship is sailing, but also when it is moored or docked in port. Diesel is used to power its generators. According to the conclusions of the scientists who assessed the impact of the Port of Klaipeda activities last year, the electricity supply infrastructure at the quayside would make a significant contribution to reducing emissions.
In particular, the Port of Klaipėda will install this infrastructure for the DFDS Seaways and TT-Line ferries calling at the Port of Klaipėda. The first four electric stations for the ro-ro ferries should be operational in 2026. Three stations will be installed at the Klaipėda Central Terminal and one at the Klaipėda Container Terminal. The same stations are planned for container ships, cruise ships, and the Klaipėda port fleet. The entire project to electrify the port quays will be completed in 2028.
The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority has selected an equipment supplier following public procurement procedures. Aktsiaselts BLRT ERA will complete and install the equipment. The project for constructing the electricity network is currently being prepared and the contract will be awarded once the construction permit has been obtained.
