Klaipeda Port plans to electrify its quays by 2028 at a cost of EUR 11 million

The first four OPS stations at the Central and Klaipėda Container Terminals, worth €5.3 million (excluding VAT), should be operational in 2026. The Klaipeda Port Authority said OPS stations will primarily be used for DFDS Seaways and TT-Line ferries, container ships, cruise liners, and the Klaipeda port auxiliary fleet. “The electrification of the berths is not only a technological leap, but also a significant contribution to the environmental protection of the city and port of Klaipeda,” Algis Latakas, head of the Klaipeda Port Authority, said. Currently, ships calling at the Port of Klaipeda mainly use MDO/MGO fuel. According to the Port Authority, according to the findings of scientists who assessed its impact last year, electric stations on the quays would significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

The equipment for the OPS stations is being assembled in Estonia. It will be supplied and installed by the Klaipeda branch of BLRT Era, a company of the Estonian BLRT Group.

The project would allow the authority of Klaipeda port to buy electricity from wind and solar farms. The project to electrify the quays should receive €8.6 million in European funding.
